Care in Dengue Fever

 

Dengue fever is a mosquito-borne viral infection that can range from mild to severe. Proper care during dengue fever is crucial to managing symptoms, preventing complications, and ensuring a safe recovery.


Here’s a guide on how to care for someone with dengue fever:


Recognizing Symptoms

  1. Common Symptoms

    -High fever (often up to 104°F or 40°C)
    -Severe headache
    -Pain behind the eyes
    -Joint and muscle pain
    -Nausea and vomiting
    -Fatigue and weakness
    -Skin rash appearing a few days after the fever
    -Mild bleeding (e.g., nosebleeds, gum bleeding, or easy bruising)

  2. Severe Symptoms (Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever)

    -Severe abdominal pain
    -Persistent vomiting
    -Rapid breathing
    -Bleeding gums
    -Blood in vomit or stool
    -Fatigue, restlessness, or irritability

     

    Immediate Care

    1)Rest and Hydration

    Ensure the patient gets plenty of rest. Physical exertion should be minimized to conserve energy and aid recovery.

    Encourage the patient to drink plenty of fluids, such as water, oral rehydration solutions, coconut water, and clear soups, to prevent dehydration.


    2)
    Fever Management

    Use acetaminophen (paracetamol) to control fever and relieve pain. Avoid aspirin and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like ibuprofen, as they can increase the risk of bleeding.

     Apply cool compresses to the forehead to help reduce fever.

    3)Diet and Nutrition

     offer light, easily digestible foods such as porridge, broth, fruits, and vegetables. Avoid spicy, oily, or heavy foods that might aggravate nausea.

     Monitor food intake to ensure the patient maintains energy levels despite reduced appetite.
